Nortel’s Optical Packet Edge System is based on Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology. This technology was created by Nortel and standardized by the IEEE 802.17 working group. RPR allows operations between equipment from multiples vendors, as well as between networks of different service providers.

The key features of the Optical Packet Edge Systems include a reduced need for external routers. It provides a seamless interworking between SONET and IP networks. Proficient fiber utilization is achieved through metro or wide-area traffic aggregation. It also provides efficient and low cost Ethernet transport between multiple sites even if they are far apart. It has the ability to support a mixture of packet and TDM traffic over the same network and the restoration times are less than 50ms in case of fiber cut or node failure.
